With this tutorial, you’ll see how to finish seams with your general zig-zag presser foot. If you don’t own a serger, you can still make neat seams that prevent the fabric from unravelling.

Thank you so much for taking the time to make these vidoes. You have answered 2 questions for me today. I have been cutting my old prefold cloth diapers in otder to make prefitted diapers. When I get done sewing the backing on I have unfinished edges and no serger. I was wondering how to tidy up those finished edges. Also, another question. If I have sewn elastic around the legs of these and then decide I want to add an extra layer to the material, do I sew over the elastic? I’m stuck on this one.

I am teaching myself how to sew so I have a ton of questions.

    Thanks :-)

I’ve never done that, but I’d recommend sewing the extra material over the elastic, since elastic often doesn’t feel good against the skin.

If I recall my prefit diaper days, the elastic is covered with a “casing” made of something like bias tape. You could sew the edges of the new pre-fit diaper with bias tape (right side to right side, then turn under the other edge of the bias tape and stitch to the diaper on wrong side), then insert the elastic through the bias tape.

(cough), inserting elastic is a tutorial I’ve been asked to video ;) .

Whenever I try to zig zag a seam edge, the fabric always curls up and leaves a rigid edge. I have tried adjusting the tension, but it never seems to help. Is there a trick to it?

Have you tried increasing the stitch length? Maybe longer stitches will leave more room for the fabric to stay softer. I haven’t had the problem you’re describing.
