A serger is also known as an "overlock" machine. The overlock stitch is what you see on most store bought ready to wear clothing seams. It looks similar to a tight zig-zag stitch that keeps the material from unraveling or fraying. Generally, a commercial serger cuts the material along the seam as it sews, unlike a regular sewing machine where you sew the seam first and then finish the seam with a zig-zag stitch. This saves time when finishing seams, and makes for a more professional looking garment.
