The Right Feet for Your Singer Sewing Job

Looking for the right Singer sewing machine foot to do the job? If you're zig-zag stitching, you need a different foot than when you're sewing in a hidden zipper (zig-zag foot shown to the left), which is different than the foot you need for sewing flat buttons (did you know most Singer sewing machines can sew in a flat button with the right foot to do the job?), which is different than the foot you need for ditch-stitching a narrow stitch. Most of the time your pattern instructions will tell you which foot, if a special foot is needed. Otherwise the general, all-purpose sewing machine foot is the zig-zag foot. You can do almost anything with that sewing machine foot!

The sewing machine foot is also designed to keep the fabric under the needle and move it properly along the track of sewing. There is usually a mark in the middle which gives you a clear indication of "middle" for the times when you switch the needle position to left or right. There are feet which you must undo the whole screw on shank, and others that just snap on and off the bottom underneath the needle. It's easy to interchange the snap-on kind, just be careful of your finger under the needle when you're applying pressure to the sewing machine foot to get it to snap in.

I lucked out and my Singer 3343 came with a number of presser feet included. I'll tell you my favorites, because learning to use them has often made a huge difference in my sewing experience.

The Button Sewing Presser Foot, also known as the Button Sew-On Foot, holds a flat button in place for secure machine sewing. I love this presser foot, as it means being able to machine sew on buttons. It's meant to be used with a feed cover, but I always forget to put that on.
The Zipper Foot is used for sewing in zippers. It snaps on to the bottom of the shank, and it makes sewing zippers in much easier.
The Straight Stitch Presser Foot, also known as the Narrow Stitch Foot, helps with "sewing in the ditch" to keep seams really flat or tack down interfacing seams.
